Our series of FREE Teach Meets aim to support and celebrate you in your role as a music teacher or music lead in primary and secondary education. Leading the sessions will be Phil Griffiths, a lecturer for both Primary and Secondary PGCE Music courses at Bath Spa University. His main musical interests lie in composition and arranging. Having written and arranged for bands, choirs and soloists for many years, he is keen to find ways of supporting students interested in composition.
Teach Meet Session Outline
4.30pm-5pm: Phil presents a Key Note on Regaining Musical Skillsets Across Education.
“Music teacher recruitment nationally is in decay. There is also a marked decline in basic, transferable musical skills that candidates applying for teacher training bring. The landscape for music education in the UK is therefore currently in crisis. Despite the reintroduction of a bursary for trainees, only 27% of the government's target for music teacher trainees was met in 23/24, and only 40% met in 24/25. This music education landscape is not all bad news, but the national decline is dangerously worrying and … It's happening on our watch! What must we do to safeguard an effective and productive future for music education at both regional and national level?”
5pm-5.25pm: Five minute cameos from you. Talk about your successes and best practice as a music educator.
5.25pm-5.40pm: Break for nibbles/drinks/chat and laughter.
5.40 – 6.15pm: Time for Q&A to expand on topics discussed and ways forward with your music delivery in your school.
You can choose from one of three sessions. Fill in the form below to register your place. Deadline for signing up is Monday 10th March.
